SkimboardsThere are two main different ways to ride a skimboard. Both include gliding over a thin layer of water or wet sand. One way leads to a wave, in which you would then cut in and ride the wave similar to a surfer, and the other is all about riding in shallow water on beach flats known as flatland or inland skimming. Flatland skimming is more like skateboarding giving you the option to ride rails and throw technical freestyle tricks. Both styles can be ridden by beginners and provide enough technical skills for intermediate and advanced skimboarders. Check out the skimboard companies below.
Although wave riding is sometimes considered more advanced than flatland skimboarding, flatland skimboarding has become more and more popular and taxingly difficult over the years as more advanced rails, ramps and technical tricks have become the norm.
Skimboarding is easy to learn. Grab your board head to the beach, lake, river bed, or flooded area and find a very shallow stretch of water, then run with your board in hand throw it out in front of you and jump on. You will skim across the shallow water. After you have mastered the basic techniques you can move to more complicated tricks, riding and cutting into the waves, grinding rails, or other skateboarding maneuvers. |
